In August 2011, when I was 28 and my husband was 37, we set a goal to retire in 10 years (by August 2021). In March 2013, my husband started reading Mr. Money Mustache, a blog by a middle-class engineering type who saved a lot and retired by the time he was 32. We looked at our finances and realized that if we made enough changes and saved enough, we could be financially independent even earlier than we originally planned.
We started making a lot of changes starting in March 2013, and even though we have always been somewhat minimalist, I realized that I loved the challenges and could do a lot more than we were already doing.
As a teacher, I collect information about my students’ progress so that I can figure out what they need and where they should go next. It made sense to do the same thing for myself. Also, I process ideas better through either verbal or written language. This blog was born in April 2013 as a way to be accountable to myself and to push me to have an interesting, engaging life full of new learning and experiences.
